Kevin realises his potential thanks to free digital skills training

09 Nov 2020

Kevin has found employment thanks to the digital skills he gained from the BT Skills for Tomorrow programme. His new skills gave him the confidence and independence to take control of his career and realise his potential.

Kevin, 48, from Coventry had limited digital skills - he was able to use social media on a very basic level and search for jobs online. But his lack of other digital skills, like filling in forms online and sending emails with attachments, meant that he wasn’t able to apply for the jobs that he found.

Kevin was referred to New Start 4 U, a Skills for Tomorrow funded community partner, through a friend who had already used the service. Kevin promptly contacted the centre through their Facebook page and arranged an appointment with an employability advisor.

With the support of the advisor, Kevin completed online courses on Learn My Way that helped him update and improve his CV, prepare for interviews, use the internet to find a job, and improve his confidence and communication skills. As a result Kevin grew in confidence, and buoyed by his new skills, he was able to communicate with potential employers in a positive and assured manner.

Irina Solovjova, Employment Engagement and Outreach Adviser at New Start 4 U tells us: “After successfully completing the programme Kevin is more confident in himself. He found a part time job and improved his digital skills. Having the support of the centre and the employees, the workshops and advice made Kevin realise his own potential and not be scared of challenging opportunities. He applied for work positions he had not considered before due to his lack of confidence and was able to find employment in a few months.”

Despite Kevin’s recent success he is striving for more. He plans to continue job hunting to find a full time job, as well as learn more about the internet and MS Office programmes to be able to make changes to his CV and create basic files for his own needs.

Kevin reflects on his experience: “The course has made me more confident and independent. The support I received was empowering and friendly and I would recommend it to anyone who needs support learning new digital skills.”
