New research shows that internet access is among top 20 things Brits are most grateful for

New polling reveals that amidst financial concerns and the cost-of-living crisis in the UK, 38% of people are most grateful for internet access, with one in three unable to imagine life without a smartphone.

New research commissioned by Good Things Strategic Partners, Virgin Media O2, spotlights the 20 things that people living in the UK are most grateful for. With Christmas on the horizon and many people still feeling the effects of the cost-of-living crisis, there is still a lot that Brits are happy about this holiday season.

With things like hugs, partners and hot meals all making an appearance, the research also reveals that 38% of people are most grateful to have access to the internet. One in three of those polled said they cannot imagine life without a smartphone, highlighting the importance and necessity of internet access for all.

The data indicates that Almost two thirds (64%) think this winter and Christmas will be tougher financially than last year. One in three (33%) admit that the festive season will be financially challenging, with 64% having to scale back their Christmas expenses.

At a time where connecting with loved ones is so important, people shouldn’t have to sacrifice their internet connection this holiday season.

That’s why we created the National Databank in collaboration with Virgin Media O2 and with data donated from Vodafone and Three. The National Databank is like a food bank, but for mobile data – it provides free mobile SIM cards for people who need internet connectivity through the National Digital Inclusion Network.

The research comes as Virgin Media O2 and Good Things Foundation are helping more people in need access free mobile data, texts and calls by rolling out the National Databank to hundreds of O2 stores and are increasing the amount of free data available to 25GB per month.

Virgin Media O2 and Good Things Foundation with support from Community Calling, is also expanding the National Databank to charities, Crisis and Change Please – Driving for Change, which support people experiencing, and at risk, of homelessness.

Rob Orr, Chief Operations Officer at Virgin Media O2, said: “As we approach the season of goodwill, it’s heartening to see the nation is both grateful for the simple things in life such as their loved ones, but are thinking about others who are less fortunate, too.

“We’re helping people most affected by the cost-of-living crisis this Christmas by making the National Databank available in more places than ever before, and by increasing the amount of free O2 mobile data available so those that need it can get online, access essential services, and stay connected to loved ones.”

One in three (33 percent) admit that the festive season will be financially challenging, with 64 percent having to scale back their Christmas expenses. Those with an annual household income between £35,000 and £54,999 were the most concerned (67 percent).

This research of 2,000 Britons was commissioned by Virgin Media O2 and was conducted by Prospectus Global in October 2023.
