Virgin Money became the first UK bank to become a member of our National Databank, offering free mobile data to people who cannot afford it. Through this initiative, customers visiting Virgin Money stores or banking hubs can request a free O2 SIM loaded with 25GB of data per month, renewable for up to six months.
This partnership addresses both immediate and systemic barriers to digital inclusion. In addition to providing free connectivity, Virgin Money promotes our Learn My Way platform to support digital skills development and encourages customers and colleagues to donate to the National Device Bank, which redistributes refurbished smart devices to people in need.
Virgin Money’s internal engagement has been a key strength of the partnership. Through initiatives like the “SIM-Free Saturday” challenge—where staff voluntarily spent a day without internet access—employees gained direct insight into the experience of digital exclusion and helped raise awareness more broadly.
The partnership is backed by research Virgin Money commissioned, which found that:
- 29% of people know a friend or family member who lacks internet acces
- 40% of households with children in the UK fall below the Minimum Digital Living Standard
By combining customer-facing services, internal advocacy, and public engagement, this partnership offers a comprehensive model for addressing digital exclusion from multiple angles.
