Crossing the digital divide: Sadiq's story
Retirement wasn't the end for Sadiq - with support from the National Device Bank and a digital inclusion hub, he's now pursuing his passion for automotive engineering.
Studying without a device at home
Sadiq started his life in the UK over 30 years ago - travelling from Nigeria on a Government scholarship to do marine engineering. After completing his training and working in the field, he moved onto university to study social work, then worked for a local council until retirement.
But, Sadiq wasn't ready to slow down. He wanted to keep learning and growing, so he enrolled on a course in automotive engineering. However, without a laptop of his own, studying became a real challenge. He could use the computers at his local library, but only for limited periods. The college offered laptops to borrow, but only while he was on campus.
That's when Sadiq discovered Riverside Learning and Education Centre, a National Digital Inclusion Network hub based in Liverpool. Coming to the hub gave him access to the technology and skills he needed to continue his studies.
Getting a device and developing digital skills
Keen to continue his passion for learning, Sadiq built on his existing digital skills with Learn My Way - our free online learning platform. Through the hub, he also received a device from the National Device Bank.
Sadiq said:
"I thought if I used it, I had to leave it at the hub. I couldn't believe it was mine. If I'm not here I use it at home at my own time, in my own space. Nobody tells me 'Sadiq it's enough - leave the laptop.'"
Opening up opportunities
Sadiq's life has been transformed. With a laptop to call his own, completing tasks is simpler and it's saving him money too. He can easily switch between things he wants to do and it's given him the freedom to complete his coursework where and when he wants to.
Sadiq added:
"With the laptop I can do my college work that I haven't got time to complete while in college. The centre has helped me access some of the applications too."
Building a community and confidence
Riverside Learning and Education Centre has become a space for Sadiq to reach out for digital and social support. Now, he has the technology, the skills and the confidence he needs to move forward.
Sadiq said:
"I've gained so much and I'm still gaining more, so that's why I would love to continue coming here. I've benefited so much. It could have been a disaster, because I was struggling without the laptop. It's helped me a lot."
