Circular Electronics for Social Good: Research Partnership with Deloitte and CEP

We partnered with Deloitte and the Circular Electronics Partnership (CEP) to explore how businesses can play a role in bridging the digital divide through the responsible reuse of IT equipment. The research focused on understanding both the practical barriers and strategic opportunities for organisations seeking to donate technology.

Drawing on interviews with more than 20 senior leaders across retail, tech, telecoms, financial services and media, the project examined perceptions around data security, logistics, internal policy constraints, and employee engagement.

The findings were published in the 2023 report “Circular Electronics for Social Good: Reusing IT Equipment to Bridge the Digital Divide.” Key themes included:

  • The need for clearer guidance on secure data wiping and device donation processes
  • Opportunities to link device reuse with ESG and circular economy commitments
  • The importance of cross-sector collaboration in developing scalable solutions

Alongside the research, the partnership helped raise awareness of how refurbished devices can make a real difference—especially when combined with connectivity and skills support.

This project not only provided thought leadership for the business community but also influenced internal policy discussions within participating companies. It strengthened the collective advocacy of all lead partners, helping to shape national conversations around digital inclusion, e-waste, and corporate responsibility. Importantly, it also laid the groundwork for a joint pledge between Good Things Foundation, Deloitte, and Vodafone to develop a Device Charter, a key commitment in the UK Government’s 2025 Digital Inclusion Action Plan.
