DevicesDotNow: Florence

DevicesDotNow aims to get thousands of internet-connected devices to people who are even further excluded from technology during the coronavirus outbreak. We hear from Florence, one of the recipients of a device.

Florence Mable, who is 91, lives in Woodley in Stockport in her one-bedroom flat. Florence is very independent but since the outbreak of coronavirus, she hasn’t been able to leave the house.

Until 5 weeks ago, Florence had never used the internet. Through Online Centre Starting Point, Florence was identified as someone who could benefit from support through the DevicesDotNow initiative.

“I do get a little bit down sometimes because of my illness. But just being able to talk to my family has helped a great deal.” says Florence. She now uses the device to keep in touch with her daughter in Australia, who she hasn’t seen for 25 years. “At night is when I get lonely. So when I’ve spoken to one of them, afterward I think – oh how lovely it is to be able to talk to them like that.”
