Libraries Workforce Development

Libraries are often situated right at the heart of their communities, perfectly placed to help local people access information. In this increasingly digital age, much of this information is found online and libraries need to be able to assist people with digital skills as well as the more traditional ones.

In 2014, Good Things Foundation developed the Workforce Development Programme - a programme of training for customer-facing staff in public libraries, empowering them to become confident digital users, and helping to ensure that they can deliver the core elements of their Universal Information offer.

Funded by the Arts Council, we worked with the Society for Chief Librarians (SCL) to develop bespoke materials and an eLearning course, training 50 regional leads at Train the Trainer events across the country.

From Sept 2014-March 2015 these regional leads went out to cascade their digital knowledge down to public library staff, creating Digital Champions just where they were needed most.
