Crowdfunder supports most vulnerable to get online during COVID-19

06 May 2020

An urgent Crowdfunder to support vulnerable adults to use the internet and stay connected, healthy and safe during COVID-19 has been launched.

The appeal, which is being spearheaded by us alongside DevicesDotNet, will help households who don’t have access to the internet and are digitally excluded as we face a socially distanced world during COVID-19.

The DevicesDotNow campaign is asking for contributions to help buy tablets and laptops, as well as connectivity in the form of SIMs, dongles and mobile hotspots.

Funds contributed will also be used to support community partners across the UK, enabling them to help society’s most vulnerable people to use digital technology during the pandemic.

It supports fast action to help some of the 1.9 million households in the UK who lack any kind of internet access, and the 11.9 million people in the UK who do not have all the Essential Digital Skills needed for day-to-day life.

Many of these vulnerable people - like Mable (below) - have been advised to self-isolate, cutting them off from the world without the digital skills and the internet access they need to keep safe.

They are cut off from critical online services and accurate health information; they can’t buy essentials online, and can’t communicate with family and friends using video chat to see their faces.

We need to act quickly and safely to help the people who would like to get connected and to become part of the digital world. We can get them a device and connectivity, and provide support (remotely) to learn how to the internet and drastically improve their wellbeing during the lockdown.

The devices will be distributed through our network of community partners who specialise in supporting vulnerable people in our society.

100% of donations will help individuals most in need;

  • 50% of donations will buy tablets, smartphones and laptops, as well as connectivity in the form of SIMs, dongles and mobile hotspots.
  • 50% of your donation will go to local community organisations to provide remote support on how to use the devices.

Our staff time and that of DevicesDotNow staff will be provided in-kind during this appeal due to the urgency.

  • Donate now to keep the most vulnerable people in our communities safe, healthy and connected to loved ones.
